It is my passion to share with others and assist with health and wellness goals. I strive to find ethical capitalists, and give them the credibility they deserve. Making informed choices about the products we consume is critical, and can be overwhelming unless someone really spends a lot of time researching. My goal is to introduce product lines that help to bridge the gap between conscious consumerism and maintaining a life that is stress free and moderately indulgent.

Dr. Judith Rich: Winter Solstice: A Paean to the Pregnant Darkness (excerpted)
Winter Solstice: We come to the portal that separates darkness from light. Standing in this arch of time where Earth takes a breath before facing us back towards the sun, we too, take a breath, turn inward, pause in this pregnant moment and let darkness reveal its gifts.
Winter Solstice: A fertile time, a time to ready the womb; a time for pregnant possibility. A time to sow seeds of imagination, to germinate in the darkness. A time to tend the inner hearth; be warmed by the coals of creativity.
The Blessing of the newborn Sun God:
"Out of Darkness Light is Re-born. Carry the hope of this moment like a torch in your heart through the coming year. Let it sustain you in your times of darkness, and be a symbol of blessing in your times of joy. Let Peace be with you.
Reflections for the spirit and awareness of the shadows are magnified at this time. Here are some nice things to think about from Jacqueline

Solstice Triple Header Questions and Actions ~
What touches and inspires me at this time?
Where or how am I disillusioned?
What are my yearnings?
Am I motivated by my own creative self expression or by how I think others want me to perform?
What are my responsibilities and what am I building for the future?
May we recognize worry as a destructive effort.
May our wisdom deepen without struggle.
May our hearts find joy within the preciousness of each day of life.
Blessings to you.

Benefits of Tuina
To begin, use Tui. Tui smooths out the energy of the client and starts to build a relationship with the hands and the field of the practitioner. The client is capable of warming up to the touch. For the practitioner, it is a way to get in touch with the environment (or body) of the client. Often we find where an earring might snag, or a belt loop or pocket. Smoothing the energy out we can also begin to sense where there might be tension or stagnant energy. Tui is the first contact with the wei qi and the most superficial layer we will work with and calms the nervous system.
The next movement is Na. This is a gentle squeeze and grasp that Tuina is famous for. By squeezing out the tissues, we are now working on a blood level. Na over the entire body, and notice where there might be more skin than in other places, notice where the skin isn't pliable and doesn't want to move. The fascia and lymph benefit from all the movements but begin to be engaged here. Na will help you sense where to focus the other techniques. Much like the pulse, the layers applying to Qi, Blood, and Body fluids, we are working the layers of the body to promote more collaboration between the levels of the body.
Approaching deeper layers of the body even still, An corresponds more with the water element with it's wavelike motion, rocking the body loosening out any tension in the sinews down to the bone. Mo is next which is indicated by a quick polishing of certain areas or points. This is intentional and warming and great for trigger points and acupoints. Sau is a scratching type of movement meant to bring the circulation up to the surface and to the exterior. The fire element corresponds with this warming, Yang movement. Da is penetrating and dispersing, and resembles a "stone being tossed into a pond" with the way it ripples down into the bones and vibrates the surrounding skin increasing circulation and movement to the area.
The client experiences great benefit from using different movements in a session. The sessions can then be catered to the client depending on what things would be addressed in the session. By keeping a good flow of all of the movements, each session will be a well rounded sensory and relaxing experience.
For more information take a look at these links and contact me to set up a session.

healthy and happy communities
I wanted to share a bit of info with you all to help you along this season with staying well. We all need a little extra advice or reminder sometimes. This has been helpful information i've been using for the last few months (and maybe before that?) to keep me well. pubmed is a great source for info as well, so I trust this info. This refers to H5n1 and is nearly synonymous with H 1n1 as far as i'm concerned. For personal recommendations about taking charge of your health, contact me. http://millionshealthy.vpweb.com
Natural Antivirals
Submitted by Health Gazette on Thu, 2006-05-11 08:55. Alternative Medicine
Regular readers know that I have no time for the nonsense relating to imagined bird-flu pandemics. However. I regarded the following item of sufficient novelty to be of some interest. You may judge its merits for yourself.
Research suggests certain natural foods may be as effective against virus H5N1 as commercial antivirals.
(PRWEB) May 10, 2006 -- A Biology teacher from Australia, named Stephen Jones, has done extensive research into the H5N1 virus and compiled a list of natural foods that are effective against it and listed others that are detrimental.
The list may come as a surprise to many people since foods such as spirulina and echinacea are listed as detrimental. This strange occurrence is largely due to the fact that the virus is immune to 2 cytokines that the body produces (TNF-a and IL-6). Cytokines are compounds produced by the body’s immune system that attack and remove foreign bodies. The problem is that when a foreign body is immune to certain cytokines, the body sees that its immune response is not working and tries even harder, which can lead to what is called a cytokine storm, where the body becomes flooded with these compounds and they eventually destroy the body itself. Foods such as Echinacea actually stimulate the production of these specific cytokines; hence consuming it is not a good idea if one suspects they may have the virus.
During the 1918 Spanish Flu many healthy young people died from cytokine storms due to their immune systems overreacting. Consuming foods which suppress the production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6 and enhance the production of the ones that actually are effective against the virus will aid the patient greatly.
Other foods that create mucous in the respiratory tract, such as bananas, are also listed as detrimental due to the fact that the predominant breeding ground of the virus is the respiratory tract and another way in which a patient may suffer is due to the body's over production of mucous in this area.
Folk Medicines and Herbs to use and avoid with Bird Flu
Below is a list of foods that are said to contain substances that are natural antivirals, immune boosters or they decrease cytokines TNF-a and IL-6.
Alternative medications that are most likely to help us during a severe pandemic:
Garlic (allicin) - Very effective antiviral. Best if fresh (raw) and crushed. Must be consumed within 1 hour of crushing. Dosage is initially 2 to 3 cloves per day but later reduce until no body odour occurs. No toxic effects noted. (Pubmed PMID 9049657)
Vitamin C - Boosts the immune system and is an antiviral by blocking the enzyme neuraminadase. Viruses need neuraminadase to reproduce. There are anecdotal stories of people taking large amounts of Vitamin C (children ½) surviving the Spanish Flu. Research shows that it may reduce the production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. A study on 470 people involved giving the test group 1000 mg hourly for 6 hours and then 1000 mg 3 times daily after reporting flu symptoms. Symptoms decreased by 85%. (Pubmed PMID 10543583, 634178, 16169205, 12876306)
Green Tea (possible Tamiflu/Relenza alternative)- Very effective antiviral. Also decreases the production of the cytokine (catechins) TNF-a. Inhibits neuraminidase. May have antiviral activity that is equal to other antivirals such as Tamiflu. (Pubmed PMID 16137775)
St Johns Wort (Hypericum) - Very effective antiviral. Also decreases the production of the cytokine IL-6. Hypericum is an extract from St John’s Wort. There have been some very successful field trials in commercial flocks infected with H5N1 in Vietnam. (Pubmed PMID 7857513, 11518071, 11362353, 7857513, 11518071)
Vitamin E - Immune booster. Also decreases the production of the cytokine TNF-a. (Pubmed PMID 155882360, 10929076) Experiments involved using mice. Very suitable for immune compromised people, especially the elderly. Effects enhanced when taken with Vitamin C.
Apple Juice - Antiviral. Fresh apple juice including the pulp and skin has greater antiviral activity than heated commercial apple juice. More research is needed. Effectiveness on H5N1 is unknown. (Pubmed PMID 32832, 12452634)
Resveratrol - Antiviral. In addition to inhibiting neuraminidase, Resveratrol also sends a message to cells to stop manufacturing viruses. This is a proven antiviral found naturally in red wine, peanuts, mulberries, Japanese Knotwood root (richest source), raisins and red grapes. Resveratrol supplements are relatively inexpensive, are more stable than wine and is available in liquid form for absorption in the mouth. No toxic effects noted. (Pubmed PMID 1583880, 12817628, 15985724)
Scuttellaria (Skullcap) - Antiviral. A herb used as a tea. It has no side effects and is also a mild tranquilliser. Research suggests neuraminidase, which is a substance needed by the H5N1 virus to reproduce, may be inhibited.
Cranberry Juice - Early research shows that it may be an antiviral, making viruses less able to invade or multiply. Effectiveness on H5N1 is unknown. (Pubmed PMID15781126)
Cat’s Claw (Uncaria tomentosa) - Decreases the production of the cytokine TNF-a. Also boosts immune system. The number of white blood cells was significantly increased during treatment. No toxicity was noted. (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search&DB=pubmed) Active constituents can be found in the leaves, bark, vine, and roots. Water extraction from bark used. Children and pregnant women are to avoid. Has a potentially damaging effect on the DNA of proliferating cells. (cancers, foetuses, growing children)
Curcumin (Tumeric Spice) - Decreases the production of the cytokine TNF-a. This is the yellow compound in turmeric spice. Research shows that this may be very good for preventing a cytokine storm although this is not proven. Must be taken with food or gastritis or peptic ulcers may occur. Pregnant women and feeding mothers should avoid this. The medicinal properties of curcurnin cannot be utilised when used alone due to rapid metabolism in the liver and intestinal wall. When combined with Piperine found in black pepper the absorption is increased with no adverse effects. Obtainable from health stores in tablets, liquid, capsules already combined with piperine. Dosage is 500mg to 4000mg daily.
Astragalus root (Astragali Radix) - Boosts immune system. (Pubmed PMID15588652)
Tea tree Steam Inhalation - Reduces the cytokine TNF-a. Add 2 drops of tea tree oil in a bowl of steaming water. Cover head with a towel and inhale for 5 to 10 minutes. Relieves congestion and fights infection. Its effectiveness is unknown. (Pubmed PMID 11131302)
The following substances may be best to avoid during a H5N1 pandemic
Elderberry juice (Sambucal) - AVOID - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. This substance is very effective against the common flu but may not be desirable for the H5N1 virus. Increases in these cytokines may trigger a lethal cytokine storm. (Isr Med Journal2002 Nov;4:944-6)
Micro Algae (Chlorella and Spirulina) - AVOID - Increases production of cytokine TNF-a. (Pubmed PMID 11731916)
Honey - AVOID - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. (Pubmed PMID12824009)
Chocolate - AVOID - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. (Pubmed PMID 12885154, PMID 10917928)
Echinacea - AVOID - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. Although it is often used for normal flu, research shows that it may increase the chance of cytokine storms for H5N1. (Pubmed PMID 15556647, 9568541)
Kimchi - AVOID - Increases production of cytokines TNF-a and IL-6. (Pubmed PMID15630182)
Dairy products & Bananas - AVOID - These foods increase mucous production.

6th annual Taoist gathering
To speak of the Tao isn't easy. To write of the Tao is even harder.
The 6th annual Taoist gathering was an opportunity to allow the present moment and place in time mingle and resonate and gather with so many others on similar wavelengths. "Being and Becoming" is not an easy feat. We were reminded to "Play. Be inquisitive. Be clever." Shifu Feng told a story and shared "it's great to see the you in me." To have the mirror, the desired self reflection, the chosen way of being in the world be the Tao, or at least your current understanding of it, is a really fantastic thing.
I was particularly moved by the genuine love felt in the room and kinship between student, teachers, scholars, masters, and participants. The group intent to use this as a foundation of the various practices was also inspiring.
With many different classes and workshops, the gathering encompassed wu-wei (the art of being in the center). Allowing the facilitation of an event organized around the Tao, is a community resource and gem for many people who have no real tangible way of connecting to those who identify similarly. The Taoist gathering provided the bridge to connect the Tao, with those who have enthusiasm sharing about what they've discovered so far. In addition the sessions offered at the gathering displayed a framework of amazing suggestions for how to continue to share, and be in a teaching, or interactive life setting. Perhaps this is why "being and becoming" was the topic of discussion.
"reality is a moment. just passed.
quick... quick... too late."

flower fields forever
Flower essences have been incredibly instrumental in my life helping to restore balance, facilitate healing and hold the space for transformative energy to work it's way back to a place of harmony.
With many different choices of companies to consider, working with a practitioner is often helpful for starters. My first experience with a practitioner was amazing. I remember self medicating and being slightly confused by it for starters. Meeting with a practitioner allowed me to confront the true issue/concern at hand, and not hide from myself. Today I feel much more comfortable working with the remedies that come with intuition, and I'll admit it's taken a few essences to fine tune this. I am also more capable of absorbing various essences from the actual plant, and world around me as well.
Recently I visited the lake merritt bonzai garden again for the first time. In bloom, in a different season, I hadn't considered what harvest would look like on a bonzai.
Please stop by and visit the garden.
The essences of certain remedies i've worked with in the past were so potent to me. Many spoke, but oak, hornbean, crabapple and holly spoke clearly to me. I didn't understand whether this was because of the small, condensed version of the tree itself, or whether it had been potentized, because I had already set the intention previously by ingesting the essences. Having a botanical understanding, I don't always question my communication with plants and blooms.
Aside from being two of my favorite people on the planet, eco-entrepreneurs like Jenny Pao of Nectar Essences, and Martin of Balance water have discovered a gentle and subtle approach (if one could be offered) to getting people to use flower remedies in their daily lives.
Jenny Pao will have a discussion tomorrow evening at Alameda Marketplace from 5-6 pm. Join me and others and please say hello!
For more info on how flower essences can help you become more authentic and get you through rough patches in life, contact me. I'd be happy to connect you with a practitioner or products and walk you through any questions you might have and make recommendations. Also, the world of essences is very exciting! You'd be surprised what kind of help you can receive with just a few drops under the tongue, a sip, or spray.

Growing Our Own - October's To Do List
Shared via AddThis
I am absolutely amazed at how many options are available to share things on the web. I love placing "bookmarks" by posting them of various sites, whether blog, facebook, twitter etc. And luckily, these links remind me to post. something. anything. Writing has always been such an outlet for me, but I rarely designate the time to do so. I am reaffirming my commitment to the documentation of the consciousness that keeps ever unfolding and channeled through me.
For now, i'll write a bit about our seasonal transition.
Autumn is such a great time for feasting, and family and friends. Good recipes are always better shared. This season I look forward to meals, and harvest. Though the reality in my life, is taking time to turn inward and nurture that which has been sowed, and may need a little more nutrition or attention. The days get shorter, the mind gets quiet, activity slows to a more moderate pace.
I pulled out my sweaters that I had stowed away for the summer two years ago--long enough to forget~. I have a friend who mentioned what a novel idea this is considering in the bay area we don't really get seasons. I put them away to prevent infiltration of moths, and from bulking up my closet, but she is absolutely right. Besides, what better way to renew your wardrobe, but by going shopping in your own collection of cedar scented sweaters, in the shades you adore!
And, what I like most about fall is the assortment of flavors and spices--not to forget to mention the colors. I keep warm all year by using cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, persimmon, orange...the list goes on...Here's to pumpkin...everything!! And maybe we don't see a huge change in leaves or climate, but we can still celebrate.

Chinese face reading
for Health
The ancient art of face reading has been used since the time of Confucius by Chinese doctors as an aid to diagnosis and a way of helping their patients. Close observation of the face afforded them a deep knowledge of the personality of their patients.
There were also professional face readers during this time who combined the roles of priest, astrologer and counselor. They were well-educated men with great compassion for human frailty. The Chinese understood the concept that the face represents the energies, health and fortune of a person and they wished to live in harmony with these, and with the prevailing energies of the five elements, yin and yang, and the seasons. This wisdom has seen a huge resurgence in the West during the past 20 years with the growth of acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Feng Shui and Qi Gong.
Chinese face reading is as relevant today as it was in the past and its use is cross cultural. We all have a blend of elements and all faces reflect part of nature’s pattern. Face reading first appeared in China during the 6th century BC, possibly as the speciality of “magic men” not affiliated to any religion. It is thought that they were probably Taoist shamans from rural areas such as Szechwan who specialised in non-traditional divinational arts. By 220 BC, the art of face reading was established in Chinese life and classic treatises, such as the Golden Scissors and Bamboo Chronicles, were written at this time.
The Principles of Face Reading
The starting principles of face reading are the cosmic energies of the five elements and yin and yang. The elements are symbols and represent qualities of energy within each person which are reflected in the face. An elaborate physical, psychological and emotional profile can be built up, incorporating the energies of the features, the ‘life points’ of the face, the three divisions from top to bottom (forehead, midface and lower face) which show the nervous, circulatory and digestive systems and the facial zones which represent the internal organs.
Each face is a map of the past, present and future. The past would be described as our inherited constitution, our mother’s pregnancy, our childhood and adolescence, with either difficulties or support in the family, and our early years as we start out in the world. The present reflects our health at the time of the reading. This is something we create ourselves. Coco Chanel said: “We get the faces we deserve”: inappropriate diet, persistent negative emotions, drugs, toxins and stress all contribute to lines, congestion, and colours on the face. The facial zones affected are related to the internal organs under stress. In the same way that the feet are a microcosm of the whole in Reflexology, so the face shows the inner health status and the person behind the persona. The future is not predestined in Chinese philosophy: acts of compassion can lengthen one’s life, and taking greater care with health can resolve possible future symptoms. Sometimes destiny and the ups and downs of life can be improved by facial surgery – correcting squints helps one’s fortunes during the years 35-40. However, nose jobs which expose the nostrils and shorten the nose can affect the end of the 40s!
Balance and proportion are important in face reading, as in Chinese paintings. There needs to be harmony between the mountains (the yang element, represented in the face by the bones) and the rivers, (the yin element which is the soft tissue). Although a face may be considered beautiful by society, in face reading terms it may be too yin (upturned nose, large wide mouth, eyes too far apart, thin eyebrows). Many “waif” models have this look. In our language we have many expressions to describe character traits: “stiff upper lip, pay through the nose, two faced, keeping one’s nose clean, chinless wonder”. We may have forgotten how these came into a language in the first place, but to a face reader the nose is a “money box”, the mouth relates to communication, and the chin signifies determination, ambition and practicality. So, face reading can be used to sum up a person’s energies, to get a health read-out, to assess character, to help gain self knowledge and to plan for good health.
Types of Face
Each of the five elements has a corresponding face shape which tells the face reader that certain energies, talents, or possible health problems may be found in this person’s make up. Most people’s faces show mixed elements and thus harmony or conflict can help to determine how the person will use their energies. Harmony and balance of the elements and features can indicate times of life which are easy, while the converse can mean difficulties, poor health or bad luck. However, all the indications must be taken into account before a full reading can be done. The Chinese also say that the eyes rule the face and that a steady glow or “glitter” in the eyes shows a strong heart-spirit or lack of inner stress which can mitigate against times when the energy will be low. This certain glow of energy indicates that the heart is straight and will enhance good features and modify imbalances. Confucius said: “Look into a person’s pupils – he cannot hide himself”.
The Wood Face
The wood type has a long face and long nose, a broad and high forehead and narrow cheeks. The eyes should have a kindly look, and the hair and eyebrows should not be thick or wiry. The forehead should be high and wide in wood as mental direction is important for this elemental type. Wood has the energy of growth, seeing the overall picture and a vision of the future, planning and seeing through projects. Wood types with balanced faces are leaders, administrators and organisers with strong ideals. They are capable of shouldering much responsibility and willing to work for the benefit of others. They need to grow and achieve, as this is the way they learn about themselves and their path in life. One of the challenges of the wood element is to be able to “see the wood for the trees” and not get enmeshed in structures. The Chinese say that a balanced wood face is a pre-requisite for Government.
The emotion that relates to wood is anger which is also the energy used for growth, development and reaching maturity. It is the desire to assert who we are and to fulfill our vision. When this desire is frustrated and blocked it can become explosive anger (the yang aspect) or implode into depression (yin aspect). If the wood type cannot put out “new twigs” every year the “tree” gets very stunted and this can translate into irritability, frustration and indecisiveness instead of good judgment, self motivation, precision and sound planning. Blockages in the free and easy flow of wood energy makes the liver and gall bladder susceptible to disease as well as causing headaches, digestive problems, gallstones, and ulcers. Foods to be avoided are oily or greasy food, and alcohol. Examples of wood faces are Tony Blair and Prince Charles, although Prince Charles’s eyes are smaller than Tony Blair’s, indicating a more reserved personality.
The Fire Face
The fire type also has a long face with narrow, prominent cheekbones, pointed chin and a more pointed forehead than the wood type. They may have freckles, red, curly or wiry hair, rapid speech and quick body movements. The fire element brings warmth and enthusiasm to the personality with a capacity to inspire and get people “fired up”. They are active and outdoorsy, goal centered, fast paced and adventurous. They can sometimes take crazy risks, and constantly seek stimulation and excitement.
If the fire goes out, the fire type becomes a rather withdrawn and timid character, lacking in joy and motivation. The challenges of the fire element are to find that warmth and positive joy inside. You can see this in the eyes – if the “glitter” or sparkle of the eyes is controlled – think of Ram Das, the spiritual teacher. Excess fire can make you prone to heart problems, anxiety and insomnia or skin rashes. Fire types need to include some bitter foods into their diet from time to time such as chicory, dandelion, and burdock. Blood nourishing foods and herbs are an important consideration for them. Some do very well on ginseng.
The Earth Face
Earth personalities are characterized by short square faces with distinct jawlines, sallow complexions, thickset bodies and deep voices. The features can be large, especially the mouth which relates to the stomach and intestines. Earth has the ability to be still and to build a solid base in life.
Earth types are practical, persevering, reliable, stoical and careful with money and make good treasurers. They are not so dreamy or idealistic as wood types and not as swayed by emotion as water types. They tend towards the traditional ways of doing things and can have problems with worry, food issues, stomach and spleen disorders, and assimilating food (and life) and transforming these into Qi energy. The stomach channel runs along the jaw line and a weak earth can mean no jaw line. Conversely, too much earth can signify a tendency to stubbornness, selfishness and a reluctance to change.
The emotion of sympathy is associated with the earth element – this can manifest as over-caring and nurturing, or a lack of sympathy and inability to nurture oneself. Nutritional advice, supplementation and digestive enzymes are often suitable for earth types. A diet which avoids sugar and dairy is suitable as these foods tend to “blow out” the digestion and create what the Chinese call “damp” – a form of internal mucus which gets trapped in the connective tissue and causes symptoms such as heavy legs, bloating, excess catarrh, muzzy heads and lethargy. The challenges for earth personalities are to be in the material world and to experience fruition, harvest, nurturing of self and others, rhythms, stillness and a sense of being centered and grounded.
Two classic earth shaped faces are David Coulthard, the racing driver, and Arianna Stassinopoulos Huffington. Both these faces show the yang aspect of earth which is focused intention.
The Metal Face
The metal face is oval with widely set, chevron cheekbones and a pale complexion. Usually good looking, they have clear, shining eyes with a lot of energy coming out of them. The eyebrows are pale, the speech is clipped and the hair is usually straight. They are good advisers, lawyers and counselors. Metal is the element of the mind.

The student is ready
As a student myself, I'd often find my peers I could relate to mostly often were Ph.D students, or researchers. It is slightly alienating to not be able to really identify with some of the other students in my class, though I found ease in the alliance with professors and other mentors to really feed my spirit. And occasionally I will meet "peers" that are teaching and can critique their approaches. I try not to delve too much in that mindset, but instead celebrate those I can and do relate to, those who can offer advice, and those whose advice and wisdom I am capable of really putting to heart.
I came across a man at the marketplace one day, who shared with me a special bit of information. I am firm believer in "there are no coincidences" and when "the student is ready, the teacher will appear." I had been looking into Ayurveda a bit, and had just barely scratched the surface of what the various doshas were, and how I could identify along with the constitutional manifestations of these types.
Peter shared in the most gentle voice that my constitution "was a gift." I was delighted to hear this of course, since I had associated some of my "constitution" as a negative trait. We often identify with the negative aspects of our personality and body type. He shared with me he was an Ayurvedic Doctor. I wanted to learn more and asked if he'd be willing to consult.
I had no idea the depth of insight i'd be able to achieve about myself with an hour and half long consult. The questionnaire was the most personal and insightful piece of information i've ever come across.
Peter Malakoff, having studied extensively in India is a wise storyteller, http://www.petermalakoff.com/ a founder of an amazing ghee company, http://www.ancientorganics.com and an incredible physician as well as a man with a delightful sense of humor. For patients, he explains things in depth yet simply. He makes Ayurveda tangible and takes it out of the realm of trendiness, into an ancient art form that has profound results. Prior to meeting with me, he had a vedic astrologer take a look at my chart to determine a little more about my nature and various influences and potentials in my life. I have since developed a relationship with "my chart" and find it to be like a parent in a way.
My world opened up when I learned more about my constitution. Now instead of being so wrapped up in an emotion, food craving or lifestyle habit, I understood it as an imbalance in a certain part of my dosha. The goal of understanding the way these phenomenon relate is not only causal as I had previously understood, but a way of achieving and maintaining balance whether about weight or mood.
Balancing a dual dosha isn't easy to do. So luckily I can call on Peter as needed to refine my approach or ask questions about another bit i'm now ready to include in my regimen. His advice is not just for preventative as I had previously considered the discipline to largely be associated with. Instead, even in acute circumstances, I've found Ayurveda's advice to be incredibly useful. And it's not always simple.
I've found Ayurveda to be very successful at helping with heartache and relationship troubles as well as headaches (all types), insatiable appetite, and low energy. Ayurveda is not only about learning how to live in accordance with the seasons, which can not always be controlled with today's environment but mainly within the realms of understanding our constitution and working continuously on this road of self improvement. To prevent and and eliminate disease, we must look at the cause. Ayurveda is the most comprehensive approach to any manifestation of an imbalance in mind body or spirit. Working with a trusted practitioner like Peter is such a blessing and incredible opportunity.

Saffron Gourmet

Saffron Gourmet
1007 Solano Ave
Albany, CA 94706
(510) 528-8282
I must mention the name of this place gives away some of my affinity for exotic spices, so naturally I was thrilled to stumble in while wandering one morning on Solano ave.
The owner and market are a true gem of a find with flavors out of this world. The smells, well, words cannot do justice. I encourage you to go there and give your nose the opportunity to experience it for yourself.
I visit Saffron whenever I can. I am quite hooked on a lot of the signature dishes usually including pomegranate, or moroccan flavors. Even rice! Who knew rice could taste so good? My delight continues when I find zataar, and challah. Though I am not Jewish, I have an affinity for really good finds and food, and respect and honor hospitality.
The spices are curious even to my not so standard american diet (SAD), and make the entire mouth happy.
After speaking with the owner a bit, I learned a little more about his philosophy of food and what a slow food advocate he is. Naturally! To find someone who is capable of creating a way for people to have complex and healthy dishes, by bringing in traditional dishes to a take out counter, dinners don't have to be complicated and entertaining need not be a burden.
Jamsheid has engineered flavor. Additionally he's dishing ingredients of season, enthusiasm, natural ability, and passion in every culinary masterpiece.

astrology and astronomy
A Solar eclipse occurs when the Moon is exactly between the Sun and the Earth, blocking the solar rays from reaching us. From ancient times to the modern-day world, solar eclipses have heralded spectacular events and drama! This eclipse occurs in the last degree of Cancer -- and brings all the Cancerian energies of home, family, nurturing, caring, maternal instincts, emotions and sensitivity into focus.
Eclipses always occur in pairs. While a lunar eclipse brings the past into the present to see what works, a solar eclipse brings the future to present and triggers new potentials. Since Cancer rules family, home and vocation these areas will take center stage during this eclipse.
What does the eclipse mean for you? Since this eclipse occurs in the sign of Cancer, its impact will feel different depending on which House Cancer is positioned in your birth chart. Where the eclipse falls in the chart is significant, as the energies expressed by its house placement will show the areas of life that are affected by the new beginning that is implied.
If your Sun sign or Ascendant is Cancer, almost every part of your life will be affected. If Cancer is in your First or Seventh House, you will focus on yourself, your marriage or your relationship. If it is situated in the Second or Eight House, your earnings or joint finances will be impacted. If it is the Third or Ninth House, travel or educational pursuits are highlighted. In the Fourth or Tenth House, home and career will be front and center. Eclipses in the Fifth or Eleventh House put the spotlight on self-expression, children, groups and organizations. Finally, eclipses in the Sixth or Twelfth House put the focus on health, work and service. Wisdom holds that events that are triggered by an eclipse usually take six months to unfold, so you can expect this process of change to continue. The opportunity to break old patterns will present themselves as you make changes.

another letter---this one about leadership
I just spent the last week vacationing on the shores of Lake Ontario, a hallmark setting, not a rumble of city life for miles. Subsequent to this gorgeous setting I had very little access to the outside world. The one day that I was able to get the New York Times, on my iphone actually, I was struck by an article about President Obama’s nominee for Surgeon General.
Dr. Regina Benjamin is a rural Alabama family physician whom founded a clinic in a small shrimping village called Bayou La Batre. (sound familiar…yep Forrest Gump) The town of 2,500 contained residents with almost no health insurance, most are immigrants from Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. Since opening the clinic, she has rebuilt it 3 times due to hurricane devastation. During the rebuilding she twice mortgaged her own home, maxed out 3 credit cards, and to this day is owed $300,000 dollars of her own money she put into the clinic. If this is not the mark of a leader, someone who leads with action, then I don’t know what is.
I’ve often found that when academics, motivational speakers, politicians and the like speak of leadership, they regularly refer to military heroes. Individuals whom have marked themselves on the battlefield, bled for country, cause, or possibly just the man next to them. These metaphors ring true in our ears, years of cinematic vignettes flood our minds. We recall explosions, last breaths and the fearless leader promising it will be okay.
Fortunately for most of us, we have never had to endure the trappings of war, never been asked to charge a bunker in some distant land, or take a final sweetheart letter from a fallen comrade. But still each day offers us a chance of sacrifice, an opportunity to provide leadership in a moment of uncertainty, give hope when it seems there is nothing to be promised. We do not need a battlefield to experience this, we simply need to open our eyes to the opportunity before us.
We awake each day with the incredible gift to lead. Leadership is not pithy sayings, kitschy slogans, or daily calendar quotes. Leadership is taking on the personal responsibility, everyday, to have your actions and deeds be the example that your words describe. Leaders awake every morning with the conviction of person to carve their own path, they call on their own minds to be the lighthouse of guidance. A leader has the confidence, and welcomes the challenge, of standing alone, accountable and compassionate of others. A leader does not say, “follow me”, rather, a leader says, “follow you.” Be reliant, and unwavering with the commitment to yourself, and your own personal truth.
Leaders have vision. There is very little more powerful than an individual’s imagination. Imagination is often associated with fanciful daydreaming, the best friend of childhood. But imagination is the emotional capital of the true entrepreneur. It’s not enough to articulate your vision; you must be the very manifestation of your words. Leaders are always cognizant of the greater purpose, and have active plans of achievement.
Leaders set standards. Accountability begins intrinsically. We often assume accountability is a list of responsibilities. A schedule, punctuality, bills. Accountability comes from within. It is the fervent belief that I will not let myself down.
Leaders take vigorous action. Passivity is the mark of the follower. They are stagnant and allow themselves to be victims of circumstance rather. Circumstances only befall those who allow it to be so.
Leaders make excellence the expectation. An individual can never outperform their own expectations, if they expect excellence. Mediocrity is simply the result of mediocre ambitions. Be brazen with your thoughts, desires and expectations.
Leaders don’t set out to be so, the integrity of their actions and intent make them so.
All My Best,

time keeping
Years ago I had the great pleasure of meeting a mentor, and star (gazer that is) to help me along the path of self discovery I indefinitely find myself on. After a class, a year of following the calendar, essences and a consult later, I still find myself in awe of Li, aka Stargazer.
Luckily, she was prepared, wise beyond years with essences, a calendar, and the most amazing astronomical information. Being a student of astronomy myself and delving very much into the mathematics of space and time, this is my language!
She's now found a way to keep this information in circulation for today's minds and schedules. take a listen. delight. feel free to share in my timekeeping adventures!
Here is a recent letter for you to enjoy:
Greetings Keepers of Time,
The turning of the year is nearly upon us! And it's feeling so different already...
The shift from the Year of 3 Storms Moving the Earth, and all its thunderous transformations, to the Year of 4 Seeds Forming a Dragon Portal, brings our birth and growth into form.
You might remember that last year, when the 3 Storms demanded I let go of how I had been doing the calendar, I said it felt like time to move toward a more oral tradition way of being with the calendar... well sure enough, now that the 4 Seeds of form are beginning to sprout, a New Audio Version of the Calendar is what's emerging.
Here's a link to my website where you can hear me telling the story of the Turning of the Year. Both a brief and a longer version are available, along with pdfs of the visuals for Moon 13 and Moon 1. You can listen online or download them right into your computer to listen through iTunes, transfer to your iPod, or even burn a CD. Enjoy!
http://www.keepingtime.net/audio_calendar_pg.html
I hope you'll take a listen soon, as next week, Tuesday through Sunday July 21st-26th, is a powerful sequence of days that brings the birth into form that we'll be living out all year.
Speaking of births into new forms, you'll likely be seeing lots of new sprouts and fruits from Keeping Time with Stargazer Li this year, including a new website. After 30 years of working full time in human services (while also Keeping Time), I've shifted to part time so that I can devote myself to more fully serving you during these years of profound transformation through the tools of the calendar, essences, and stargazing. So many opportunities for learning and shifting that you've been asking for and that I've been conjuring up will now have the chance to see the light of day, or the sparkling stars of night. Stay tuned!
Toward the birth of these new forms, this year I'm offering an Audio Calendar Subscription, where each Moon I'll record and send you a file where you can listen to me telling the in-depth story of that moon. You'll also receive pdfs of the visuals of all the Moons of the year. A subscription for the full year is only $37, that's about $3 a month for stories to guide your growth into this new form. A signup link is on the page with the Turning of the Year audio. If you've been receiving these emails and they've contributed value to your life, I hope you'll consider deepening your relationship with the calendar and supporting Keeping Time in growing to the next level by subscribing to this new audio calendar.
As the calendar becomes an audio/visual experience, which will enable much more depth of story to be shared with those of you who are engaged with the calendar in that way, please know that I will still be sending out moonthly email updates, but with much less detail, more just the heart of the story (which I know will be much less confusing for many of you!). This will also create space for sharing more about my new portal essences, and what's happening in the sky too.
For now, once again, here's a link to the Telling of the Story of the Turning of the Year...

Be well,
Li

celebrate interdependence

My celebrations for Fourth of July are hardly typical. Most can usually count on a big BBQ, heat and then staring at the night sky and avoiding mosquitoes. Regardless what the event, the ripeness of summer beckons our spirits and is something we can count on; whether hosting a big shindig in the backyard, accompanying others to an event or flying solo. And indeed, celebrating Independence and most holidays are about a personal declaration of who and how we like to spend our free time.
In 2006 I was boarding a plane to visit China which felt really strange, leaving that morning while all the festivities were underway. I had no idea that i'd see fireworks almost every night in China. I guess there are perks to inventing pyrotechnics!
2007, I attended the largest parade in the entire United States with a rollerskating strawberry and banana and beach cruisers, in a small town called Alameda and won an award.
2008, I visited a friends country house and there among the walnut groves and the roses in full bloom. I will never forget the Martha Stewart of a dessert we assembled. Vine ripened and seasonally appropriate blueberries, and raspberries provided the stripes along with powdered sugar and strawberries. The time it took to complete the project was not nearly divisible by the length of time it took to devour the sweet treat, a snap shot was not even granted!
This year I had the great chance to visit the Santa Fe National Forest to camp with an eclectic bunch. At first I was a skeptic, then the magic of the woods and the season took over and I met some friends who I was meant to meet and had some wholesome fun. Though it rained, A LOT, the thunder and lightening were in a way a nice alternative to fireworks. The canopy of trees that kept me warm and dry and allowed me to sit and read, one of my favorite rainy day or everyday past times will indeed be a cherished memory.
One of the themes that has brought these years together is a strange sense of longing. Among the choice of independence and the freedom this choice often provides, the paradox of feeling alone is alive and well. Within the realization of my independence, it can bring about a peculiar sense of loneliness.
It seems my cellular memory at this time of year is heightened and takes over my senses keeping me in a daze of partial present sense and mostly of nostalgia.
Maybe I do miss my brother and family, care to spend the day with a special other, or perhaps these are the stages of life that are most pivotal into creating the life and memories I choose to remember and leave as my personal legacy.
Fireworks like Christmas lights are often more fun with the kids. But what happens to the newly accustomed adults still kids at heart? What about those that are still afraid to light fires, but opt for a sparkler any day?
Eventually I'll take my Susan B. Anthony of a friend up on her invitation after the parade. Her husband plays the bag pipes and they are the coolest Kosher hippie couple, (and perhaps the only) i've ever met. I may even bring out my most prized possession, the American flag I have actually "Made in America" .

Organic necessities
I am delighted to be part of the democratic process that keeps our industry intact and represented. Every year industry leaders meet to go over critical topics. This year we met with legislators about two bills specifically. One about helping transitional farmers become organic, and another keeping pesticides out of meat.
I realize my natural inclination to tell stories derived from the bits of information I accumulate while reading, or researching. Although I give myself a bit of a hard time not being able to remember where I heard it, and as a writer this proves to be difficult because I don't want to source anything unoriginal or omit to give credit where it is due. I left a good impression on my group with my natural story telling ability and to be quite honest, oral tradition has left a big impression on me over the years and I keep it alive how I can.
Why are organics important? The process is more ecologically sensitive, caring for the entire system, instead of just production. The process leaves no residues creating more efficient use of water and soil. Additionally, instead of leaving the soil devoid of nutrients, what happens is quite the opposite. Growing organically is mutually beneficial. Often the soil is left better than in the beginning. Also, the flavor of food grown organically doesn't compare. I had a chance to dabble a bit in my biodynamic plot last summer for the first time. Nothing tastes better than homegrown produce. My carrots were so sweet, and greens juicy. (If you've ever tasted greens to be chock full of flavor and nutrients, you know what i'm talking about.)
My story about organics involved monkeys and bananas. A group of monkeys were fed bananas. The organic bananas were eaten whole. When the monkeys came to the conventional banana, they actually peeled the banana! Now you may know that bananas grade low on pesticide residual scale so this is fascinating. Imagine, monkeys even having a preference! We might be smarter than monkeys, but making decisions about what products we use and consume isn't always so easy.
Since anything you put on your body winds up in your body, it's no wonder why women would choose skin care that is organic! My favorite organic products are those that include ingredients that I can eat. Since there aren't a lot of regulatory agencies figuring out what can be in products and what shouldn't many beautiful companies like Organic Apoteke take the initiative to provide food grade ingredients that are scientifically proven and tested. With European standards and after 10 years of clinical research, we have exceptional products on the market that work. http://organicapoteke.com/ And just like organic fruits and vegetables, organic cosmetics are good for body and mind!

biodegradable is beautiful
I have had the opportunity to work along with the team at organic essence for a while now consulting and inquiring about various product development measures and marketing materials. This could not prepare me for the brilliance they'd come up with. At the natural products expo they introduced to the market a biodegradable jar! http://www.orgess.com/ The first shea butter and lip balm to be packaged in biodegradable, cradle to cradle material. I am delighted!
I'm still wishing for and wanting shampoo from this USDA certified organic line of deliciousness. Their foaming hand soaps are great. Although, I am the queen of multiple uses for product...(I may have just had a realization)! My secret leisure is using the lotion to go on my feet. With the blend of shea and cocoa butter, it moisturizing just enough, without leaving my hands over sticky.
One of the most incredible things about this company is that they care so much about the accessibility and utilization of reusable and biodegradable packaging that they didn't place a patent on it. I've noticed a few other companies don the look, with their packaging including Grateful Body! http://www.gratefulbody.com/ This, I am grateful for! The product has been slightly reformulated, and from what i've seen, I like!

Improve quality of life with daily Qi Gong
“By practicing Qi Gong, one can turn Jin (essence of life) into Qi, then Qi into Spirit. So for Qi Gong masters, the three levels are very concrete. For people who do not practice Qi Gong or some form of meditation, these three levels of existence—Jin, Qi and Spirit may be hard to understand.” --- Dr. Shui Yin Lo, The Biophysics Basis For Acupuncture And Health
Conserving energy has become a reasonable concern for the environment and the individual as we work collectively to reduce our unnecessary consumption of non renewable resources. Within the microcosm of this conservation ethic comes about the understanding that personal habits do indeed matter. Cultivating and maintaining personal energy is one of the most important practices to staying balanced in an increasingly complicated society. The market is inundated with products and services to help us minimize our ‘stress’ though the answer is often not endogenous. Our perception of the world around us shifts along with us into alignment as we tune into the capacity of our intentions with breath and movement. The daily tuning provided by having more organized and focused energy can be a lifelong technique for developing a calm mind, a healthy body and thriving spirit. Qi gong is a simple measure one can take to improve the quality of their life and bring into harmony all surrounding phenomenon.
Wellbeing can be defined in many ways. Qi gong allows the extraordinary capacity to increase sensitivities to energy, and heighten awareness. Very much like perambulatory motion, your physical body is meant to move in certain ways. Walking and riding a bike become easy once you learn how to. Tai Ji and Qi Gong and other martial forms are no different. Programming these movements into your subconscious allow numerous benefits.
Qi gong doesn’t require a huge financial investment or a lot of tools. All you need is your focused attention and your breath. A good teacher is important to help you develop the confidence that you can perform the exercises correctly on your own and motivate you to continue. Other workouts may require special equipment or machines. Various meditation practices can also encourage body awareness, and taming of the mind. Regardless of the technique, the first step is committing to a little each day. A valuable tool to help me understand the importance of adding qi gong, or other practices to my daily regimen is recognizing how my energy feels when I have completed a set. Checking in with my energy level throughout the day becomes second nature after a while. Sensing how distinctly different my body may feel, and how my mind is calm and clear is enough to convince me to keep at it. My energy is replenished and I am more productive. Though every individual benefits differently, I do not exaggerate when I say all can and will benefit.
Health is optimal when an individual has adequate energy. Qi Gong helps stabilize energy and nourish the various organ systems and anatomical structures. Energy systems beyond this can include the meridians and chakras. The basic premise for a lot of the practices is simple. Breathe and move smoothly. A teacher of mine once told me you can determine a person’s age by their flexibility. This is absolutely true. “Flexibility implies a continual adaptation while preserving or recreating a pattern of balance. This holds at all levels, from the biological system, to mental outlook, to personal relationships, to ones relationship to the world, and ultimately ones spiritual being. (Shui Yin Lo, pg. 90)”
Expressed in manifestations of spatial arrangements and proper alignment, Qi Gong and Tai Ji forms are about returning to tradition, natural rhythms and simplicity.
Qi gongs gentle movement exercises are refreshing in a no pain no gain dominated paradigm. Many of us move too fast running on empty for too long, and think this is normal. In traditional Chinese theory it is advised to exercise to the point of sweating and then to stop. Training your body to work more efficiently, by relaxing muscles that aren’t required and minimizing the impact stress has on your life; you do actually increase your metabolic capacity. Greater strength and muscle tone will naturally develop along with a heightened awareness of the space around you.
Balance in all aspects can be achieved with a daily Qi Gong practice. The exercise will begin to leak into your daily activities. Refining your awareness for the ordinary creates energy reserves. Needless expenditures of energy, emotional or physical are minimized as we become more aware. Stress has become an overused term, and no one is immune from fight or flight syndrome. By promoting maximum efficiency with movement and reactions, it becomes second nature to relax what is not necessary to utilize and respond gracefully to stressful circumstance. Our circadian activities that require little or not thought could benefit from the assistance. Whether it be blinking, movement or digestion and resting, when our bodies are working more effectively at doing what they must do, we will be clearer to do the things we want to do. Productivity is increased and our lives are more fulfilled. When energy is flowing as it should, better circulation is possible.
Circulation is possible with Qi. Emotions are movements of Qi and pain results when there is not free flow. Qi helps the blood stay warm and do what it needs to do. Performing regular exercise routines helps program your natural rhythms into your central nervous system. With the awareness received here, with what “normal” feels like, you have the capacity to be your own doctor. Sensing blockages where they exist before they cause pathology is possible.
Having body awareness is critical when learning to shift habits of stress. Behavioral patterns can influence or hinder our ability to heal. All of life is our experience and reactions. Our lifestyle indicates how we handle difficult situations. It is possible to have programmed ways of dealing with energy. Our excesses and deficiencies can be noted and worked with. A simple exercise routine adds to our experience of life as we know it. Practicing Qi Gong allows the body to adapt more effectively to stress or other circumstances. Cultivation exercises such as Qi Gong and Tai Ji enable people to work at their optimum, transform adversity, feel energized, and be more productive all leading toward healthier communities and ultimately a happy planet. As we work mindfully to conserve our energy, our livelihood increases and our life becomes more meaningful and enjoyable.
made in america ---UNITE-d
“Made in America”
The notion of patriotism has defined the identity of the United States and all countries since the existence of such nations. Patriotism can be broadly defined as having pride for one’s country. This definition can include people serving in the military, immigrants who have created new foundations here; student’s who fight to uphold rights given to us by the constitution, or by those who strictly cling to nationalistic ideals such as independence and greatness. Throughout the ebb and flow of time the American public is torn between at least two sides. We have an option to agree blindly with the nationalist ideals our country prides itself with and portrays to other countries, or to come up with our own more inclusive type of patriotism. The many changes in general definitions of patriotism have been according to historical events, specifically during the Vietnam War and after 9/11.
The history of the US can be described in relative terms by the wars we have been involved with and the international relations we have fought to preserve or destroy. To give an extensive description of the wars our nation has been a part of is not my motivation; however I do understand many of the same parallels exist with such political happenings. Rather than to attempt to give a historical examination of what has happened in the aftermath of such events, I am choosing to discuss the repercussions and reactions to these important historical events particularly the dissent among those considered patriots. The Vietnam War, WWI, WW2 and Post 911 all have one thing in common. We are caught in a state of identifying with and belonging to a nation whose reputation and choices we may or may not agree with. The disillusionment and disorientation with identifying with a nation you no longer feel part of is hard to pin point.
Luckily, these events all pushed the American public forward resulting in inevitable changes including multiculturalism, civil rights, trade, and globalization. To define patriotism without encompassing all of these new concepts seems a little closed minded. Different groups have different ideas of patriotism. Furthermore, we will only be strengthened, connected and considered “United” as a nation when we can agree on one notion of patriotism encompassing all and not excluding any particular group of individuals. For this reason I suggest the notion of patriotism is in flux and in the process of being redefined by those more likely to uphold the definition- the people.
After 9/11 I observed more people than ever before rushing to the stores to purchase an American flag. I was working full time at a retail pharmacy store, a member of a union making a little more than minimum wage. I remember turning people away, again and again. “Sorry sir, or madam, we have no American flags.” I began to question what it was about this particular incident or any major tragedy that caused so many people to all of a sudden have the need to display the pride they have for their country symbolically by the use of the flag. UNITE-D. We waited weeks until the shipment of flags arrived.
It baffled me that we had to wait so long, and when they arrived to much of my dismay sewn on the flag in little letters were the words MADE IN CHINA. I remember thinking, that’s great; we still don’t have “American” flags. I chatted with friends about coming up with our own somehow with the little sewing know how we had. I debated on whether it would be the same flag, or if it would change a bit. I acknowledged I was in no position to imitate my idols Elizabeth Cady Stanton or Susan b. Anthony and dropped the idea. We were all to busy working and living to even think about starting a movement to reclaim the rights of the making of our flag. And unfortunately, no one really cared about the preservation of this national symbol. Today we see SUV’s and other vehicles with magnets shaped like ribbons stamped on them “support our troops” also made in china.
After participating in a one of many peaceful protests in a little town after the beginning of the war, I always respond to this claim of “support our troops” with “bring them home!” Though the protest was more of a cry for other like minded individuals to unite, the act of simply identifying with each other caused much controversy. We had signs saying “honk for peace” and “peace is patriotic” and slowly but surely, the group got bigger. Luckily because of the internet, many subgroups, and other organizers the anti war movement has grown immensely, possibly to the largest organized group of protesters ever. Now, one of my favorite slogans is “you can bomb the world to pieces, but you can’t bomb it in to peace.” The down side of all the uniting amongst anti-war activists- is the influx of those continuing to side with our nation’s decision to go to war.
Many claim “freedom isn’t free” or that “America is about sacrifice.” A lot of people who have served in the military or who have family in the military can be included into this group of patriots. And though, they might consider the anti war protestors to be anarchists or unpatriotic-we all have our own beliefs.
What happens when we identify with a country we no longer understand or agree with? How can the very acts of embracing our constitutional right, the right to assemble or the right to free speech now makes us unpatriotic? I wanted to cry when a man shouted to me “where’s your American flag?!” He was driving a massive truck, revving his engine so he couldn’t here my meek response. “It’s made in CHINA.” I couldn’t understand how people could perceive me as being unpatriotic by standing firmly to the rights given to me by the power of the constitution.
In fact, I was not denouncing the country I am part of, just agreeing to uphold the tradition of voicing my opinion freely. I thought of other fights going on in different parts of the world, particularly that of the Zapatistas and where strong opposition is not so free. And though, our fight here in America is no where near as militant- the image held strong for me- that of a woman being silenced by covering her face with a bandana decorated as an American flag.
There are many people who say they stand by their country no matter what, especially in times of war. Do these people care to uphold the rights our nation was based on? Or are they motivated merely by living comfortably and selfishly the way they do, not wanting their lives to change. Many people defend the right to fight to maintain the status quo as long as it means that nothing changes. Many people are not concerned with the exploitation of land or laborers that occurs so we can live comfortably. It is my proposal that patriotism now be defined in a broader context; including and appreciating those people and resources that help us maintain who we are as a nation. Can or will America ever encompass the global world abroad? If so, what does this mean for America as it now stands?

earth day everyday
Getting in touch with the natural world is one of the healthiest things you can do -- for yourself and for the children in your life.Celebrate Earth Day! Get outside with the ones you love...
Plan Your Adventure: Locate public lands in your neck of the woods...National Wildlife RefugesNational ParksState ParksNational Forests Other Public Lands Encourage the people you care about to get outside.
What are your favorite memories of childhood? I can tell you that mine all involve being outside -- riding my bike with friends, clomping through the sun-dappled woods to wade in the pond near my house or splashing in mud puddles after a spring shower.
Today is Earth Day. What could be a better time to share our love of nature with the young people in our lives? So, this weekend, I have a challenge for you. This weekend, I challenge you to get out of the house and get outside with a special young person in your life.
The future of our planet and of the amazing creatures we share it with will largely depend on how well we teach our children to seek out these special moments and build these connections with our wildlife and wild places. In just one afternoon you can start a spark within a child that will never fade.
Studies show that spending time in nature helps kids feel secure, happy and more focused in their daily lives. This holds true for us adults, too. Spending time outdoors is restorative -- and a powerful reminder of our values. And in today’s fast-paced world, taking the time to pause and reflect in nature is more important than ever. So what are you waiting for? Get outside this weekend and help bring a sense of wild wonder to the special young people in your life.

Whole new mind by daniel pink.
here's an excerpt of the book that coins the term "symphonic thinking"
" the advanced world is in the midst of a slow change in it's operating principles. " a gradual shift from materialist values "emphasizing economic and physical security above all) toward post-materialist priorities (emphasizing self expression and the quality of life)"
"a transition from material want to meaning"...
that's what i'm talking 'bout
I like when I read books I agree with

drink tea, stay cool
One of the ways I delight in staying cool is believe it or not folks, drinking tea! I know you can find a myriad of cool things to keep yourself occupied with like ice cream from our very own fenton's http://www.fentonscreamery.com/
most consumers would be thrilled! But a dairy free--(mostly) girl like me is content with other more nutritious choices.
Though I like my tea warm most of the time, for the yummy blended tastes Lamyx provides both dairy and non dairy teas. I'm not a huge fan of soy, so I opted for the green tea, passion fruit and mango combination. I got a slight brain freeze from the indulgence, but it was worth it!

And on a recent outing I was pleasantly surprised to find a refreshing -what-tasted-to-me-like an- oolong/rooibos mix tea to go, since tea tasting time was up. Me love oolong time! I am incredibly impressed by the design of this place and was indeed reminiscent of my tea shop visits in Zhong Guo.

so when you're looking for me this summer, try the teahouses.
oh, don't forget farleaves. http://www.farleaves.com/ or samovar. mmm http://samovarlife.com/ and NUMI! how could I forget my neighboring tea house. http://www.numiteagarden.com/

A few of my favourite things
The two I am describing came into my life right as the nanoparticle question arrived in the industry. All of a sudden there was controversy over which type of sunscreen to use and which coverage was the best. After researching a bit, I concluded the chemical sunblocks that often hide as octyl and oxi derivatives aren't so good for our bodies or the water, that supposedly they are formulated to stand up against. This fact left me stunned. How could I begin to have a conscious about what I am washing down the drain, or feeding the fishes? There has been numerous data compiled about the impact it's having on coral reefs. And Zinc being a mineral gets utilized by the skin, and ultimately also ends up in the environment, but luckily it is an element, it's not a toxin. So mineral it is, and nanoparticle? or micronized? I am perfectly okay with using it. The way it's explained by someone who knows far more about me is by likening the molecule to a carpet, and when it's used in it's regular size and form there are many gaps between molecules. This space allows light to get in and penetrate, hence the melanoma or darkened moles, or whatever. By using the smaller particle size, it's actually still pretty big, but it doesn't have the gaps the others do, providing more safety.
I mentioned this simply because of Keys skincare founders Bob Root and Wendy Steele. In fact, Wendy had skin cancer and needed something that worked for her fair skin, that didn't leave her looking like she had rubbed a bunch of (un)petroleum jelly on her. Arriving upon the perfect consistency of zinc based UVA and UVB physical blockers, they formulated solar rx. The process underwent significant research and much effort. http://keys-soap.com/
Bob is a master. I want to say he's an engineer. What I like most about him is that he doesn't come from a place of profitability with his concepts. He's about providing safe and effective alternatives and working to make them more mainstream. I find so much significance in the intention-- his wife, and saving her life, and making her happy.
I love this story, because again, it's the communion of two individuals with a similar goal-passion creating a sense of tangibility for consumers.
We chatted briefly about how the industry is moving so quickly. I've wanted to contribute to a book he's working on, or at least motivate him to publish it. It's shaky ground to expose evidence that supposed natural products aren't so much.
What I love about Keys is the efficacy, the technology, the innovation, the smart and the practical. It's also the only thing that works for some serious skin ailments, the most serious i've ever encountered.
One of the products was formulated for the rescue dogs after 9/11. I remember reading an article about the shoes being provided for the dogs for the mission, to protect their paws. I was incredibly touched at this story, and also the ability to have such a testimony of ethics and ability to assist at the most critical moment.
What I wanted to mention was this rigmarole of passing on of chemicals. I think about this with disposable bottles too. When our recycling facilities are full, they are shipped away, to someplace that has the room, occasionally they'll be tossed in the ocean. I hear there is even plastic in space. Again, I don't want to be a downer. Apparently when bigger companies determine it's time to clean up their act, they have a tendency to ship their "dirty" goods around until they find a population that does not have strict regulations, or does not have the intelligent discernment. I didn't write this entry to be negative.
Having pure and clean products is an educational effort, that many do not have the afforded luxury of worrying about. When formulators go above and beyond with the engineering of fantastic machinery, production, rigorous testing and the highest purity standards I am in awe.
When shopping for sunblock, Check out http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/index.php?nothanks=1 and the database for safe cosmetics. It's not the end all be all, in terns of safety because it does have a few flaws, but it's a start.

A Toxic Tub for Baby - And a Call to Action for Congress
| Take Action! Ask Congress to Clean Up Cosmetics |
Babies across America are sitting in bubbles tainted with cancer-causing chemicals and other toxins linked to serious health effects, according to a report released today by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. Many of the contaminated products are advertised as "gentle," "pure" or "naturally refreshing."
Read the new report, "No More Toxic Tub," for all the details, but this is the quick and dirty version:
The Campaign sent unopened bubble bath, baby lotion and other products intended for babies and children, purchased in cities across the U.S., to an independent lab to be tested for 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde. Both chemicals are contaminants that do not appear on product labels, and both are carcinogenic; formaldehyde can also trigger rashes in those with sensitive skin.
The lab tested 48 kids' products for 1,4-dioxane and found it in 67 percent of the products. Of the 28 products tested for formaldehyde, 82 percent were positive. Seventeen products were contaminated with both 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde.
Huggies Naturally Refreshing Cucumber & Green Tea baby wash, Sesame Street Bubble Bath, American Girl Real Beauty Inside and Out Shower Gel, and even the iconic Johnson's Baby Shampoo were among the products that contained both of these toxic contaminants.
We know that cosmetics can be made without hazardous ingredients and contaminants. So what's going on? How is it legal for companies to sell baby and kids' skincare products that contain toxic chemicals used in embalming fluid, fumigants and automotive coolant? Worse yet, these chemicals aren't even on the label, so even the most ingredient-conscious parents wouldn't know whether the product is safe.
Take action right now: Ask your legislators to clean up cosmetics.
Some industry representatives say that a little bit of formaldehyde or 1,4-dioxane isn't going to harm anyone. But these bath products are regularly used on children in combination with numerous other products. Because our air, water and food can contain harmful chemicals, too, our total daily exposure to toxic chemicals can be significant and can add up to harm.
According to the National Academy of Sciences, several factors contribute to children's special vulnerability to the harmful effects of chemicals:
• A child's chemical exposures are greater pound-for-pound than those of an adult.
• Children are less able than adults to detoxify and excrete chemicals.
• Children's developing organ systems are more vulnerable to damage from chemical exposures.
• Children have more years of future life in which to develop disease triggered by early exposure.
The widespread presence of contaminants and other harmful ingredients in children's bath products is just one symptom of a self-regulated cosmetics industry badly in need of reform. We deserve better!
What Can You Do?
Ask your legislators to give the FDA the authority it needs to ensure that all cosmetics, from baby shampoo to lipstick to body lotion, are truly safe.
Spread the word to friends and family.
